The Wind blows through smalltown Montana

The Wind Blows Through is a reflection on my experience of rural spaces. Drawing inspiration from subtle and slow cinema, I recorded my contemplative video clips during a weeklong visit to a small town in northeastern Montana. I printed single frames from each video as cyanotypes, making these digital recollections physical. The video software ebSynth was then used to imbue the footage with the characteristics of the print, referencing the act of recollection at the same time as passing on the experience of movement and sound.

Whether I walk down the main street, drive into the wilderness, or sit and watch the cars go by, I can't help but feel a pervasive loneliness around every corner. Within the loneliness there exists conflicting feelings of comfort, anxiety, tranquility, hostility, and nostalgia. I've come to embrace these contradictions. I was a visitor in this town, you are a visitor in this town, and the wind was a visitor too.

Memory Lane

My final project for my experimental film class. Memory Lane is an experimental video project composed of photographs I have made over the last eight years. Some shot on film, some shot digitally, but all records of the moments that I have lived. The film is constructed of images graphically rather than chronologically due to the fact that our memories rarely come to us in chronological order. It is much more likely that our memories flow from one to the next while we tell stories; small objects or moments in one memory may remind us of another, regardless of the temporal difference between them. All sound in Memory Lane is from freesound.org, so I was required to not only draw on my memories to locate sounds that fit my recollection of the images, but also edit them into a complex design that conveys my experiences to a viewer.

Memory Lane was featured as an installation in Montana State University’s Helen E. Copeland gallery from October 26th to November 22nd, 2019.

Polish

Polish is a direct cinema animation made for my experimental film class. It’s mostly made from nail polish directly applied to strips of 16mm film, hence the title.

Moving On

This film was my final project in my sophomore film class. I had to be writer, director, cinematographer, and editor. Despite the stressful process of making it, I couldn’t be happier with the final product.
